About Dorset and Wilts Society of RFU Referees
As Chairman, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Dorset & Wilts Society of Rugby Union Referees (D&WSRUR)!
The Society exists to support Community Rugby in the two Counties by providing a competent referee to all matches played under the Dorset and Wilts R.F.U.. We are partnered with the Somerset Rugby Union Referees Society (SRRS), and with them are known as the Wessex Federation of Rugby Union Referees (WFRUR). Through them we are members of the Rugby Football Referees Union (RFRU) and we are also affiliated to the Dorset & Wilts Rugby Football Union (D&WRFU). In supporting rugby in the two Counties, the Society is responsible for all matters relating to Society referees including instruction, training, assessing and grading.
Our Constitution, which is set out in the Members Area of this website, has recently been amended and was approved at the 2010-11 Annual General Meeting. The running of the Society is entrusted to the Executive Committee and an annual Operating Plan gives specific goals for the Society each Season; the Operating Plan is also available in the Members Area. The Executive Committee meets regularly to discuss Society matters; the minutes of these meetings and also those of the AGM and any EGMs are also available to members.
Everyone involved in rugby whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the core values of our sport; teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. Enjoyment is a key feature of these values and applies as much to the referee as it does to anyone else. Community Rugby referees are not paid for their contribution to the sport; they referee for the good of the game and for the enjoyment that they themselves get out of being involved in a unique sport. If you would like to try your hand at refereeing with us simply click on the link on the Home page of this website and come and join us. We are a welcoming, active and involved Society and appoint to matches at all levels from Youth and School fixtures right through to Adult County matches; there is a place for all abilities of referee and you will be given training and support to help you develop your refereeing at your own pace.
If you are already a Club Referee or would just like to become more involved in refereeing in your own Club then please contact the Society to see how we can help you or your other Club referees develop. We have a wealth of experience in the Society and are only too willing to help others in the enjoyment of our sport.
Each year the Society gives a special 'thank you' to one of the Dorset & Wilts Clubs by awarding them the Bob Stock Trophy, named after one of my predecessors as Chairman, to mark their excellence in supporting the Society's Referees. The award is not easy to win and is based on marks in a number of categories given by each referee when visiting Clubs through the Season.
Enjoy your refereeing and, above all, enjoy your rugby!
Nigel Cowley
Chairman, D&WSRUR
