About the Dorset & Wilts Society of RFU Referees

Founded in 1936/7 the Dorset & Wilts Society of Rugby Union Referees provided referees to around 30 games in their first season, with a match fee of 6d to the club to cover expenses, this was reduced to 3d due to fuel restrictions.

By 1956, the Society provided refs to 172 games and there was discontent
amongst the clubs due to the charge of 5 shillings made by the society for a referee. During this season only one game was without a referee. Exchanges were made to Hampshire, Somerset, Oxfordshire and Kent.

Last season 921 appointments were made, mainly as referees but some assistant referee roles. Providing much work not only for the referees but the appointments team and many other volunteers involved.

Welcome from the Chairman

As a Society we are actively looking to increase the number of referees, especially Young Match Officials and Female Match Officials available to cover the games throughout the Counties and support new referees to accomplish the highest standard possible at whichever grade they reach.

All our referees get support to allow them to develop to their highest standard, and in the past few years several of our members have gone on to join the National League Match Officials Team, giving them the opportunity to officiate in the National Leagues.

If you would like to give refereeing a go then please get in touch and we will get you started with the whistle.

If you should have any queries about the Society and you cannot find the information on our website, please feel free to contact myself or the relevant member of Committee from the contact details below. By clicking on the roles their email address will show up.
